A bar or bat mitzvah in Livingston, Short Hills, Millburn, South Orange, West Orange or Morristown is usually two events on one weekend: the service in the sanctuary, where every congregation has its own rules about cameras, and a party that evening or the next day. Getting the first part right is a matter of asking early — what the rabbi permits, whether a camera may be in the sanctuary at all, and what the family would want photographed if it may not.
Where the sanctuary is off limits, the answer is a proper session beforehand: the tallis, the Torah if the shul allows it on another day, the family together in the building that means something to them. Then the party is photographed for the people in it — the grandparents, the friends from school, the speech and the moment straight after it — rather than for the centrepieces. We come up the Parkway from Toms River for these, and photography and cinema come from one in-house team.
