A bar mitzvah in Teaneck or Englewood usually happens in two places. The aliyah and the leining are on Shabbos in shul, where there is no camera at all, and the celebration comes afterwards: a kiddush, a Motzei Shabbos party, or a Sunday event in a shul social hall or a hall elsewhere in Bergen County. Families in Bergenfield, Fair Lawn and New Milford plan it the same way, and so do we.
Because Shabbos itself cannot be photographed, the pictures families care most about are planned for another day. A weekday session works well for that, often a Monday or Thursday when the Torah is read: him in his tallis and tefillin, with his father and grandfathers, at the bimah or the aron if the shul allows it, and the family together in the building that matters to them. It is unhurried, which is exactly what the Shabbos morning itself never is.
A bat mitzvah in Teaneck and Englewood takes more shapes. For some girls it is a dvar Torah at a kiddush or a seudah, for others a party with her friends, a chesed project she has worked on for months, or a Sunday celebration with the whole family. We ask what hers is before we plan anything, because the moments worth having are different each time: her speech and the faces listening to it, her grandmothers, her friends, and the family portraits she will actually want to look at later.
Either way the party is covered for the people in it: the grandparents arriving, the friends from school, the horah from inside the circle with a second camera above it, and the family portraits done quickly at the start while everyone still looks the way they did when they left home.
We come up from Toms River for these and do not bill the drive as coverage. Photography and cinema are one in-house team, so in a crowded social hall there is one crew to work around, not two. If your date is set, tell us the shul and the plans for the weekend and we will lay out how we would cover it.
