Bar Mitzvah Photographer in Philadelphia

A Philadelphia bar mitzvah is frequently a two-part weekend: the service on Shabbos morning, where every shul has its own rules about photography and some have none at all, and a party that evening or on Sunday. Getting the first part right is mostly a matter of asking the right questions early — what the rabbi permits, whether a camera may be in the sanctuary at all, and what the family would want photographed if it may not.

Where the sanctuary is off limits, the answer is not to shrug. It is a proper session beforehand: him with the tallis, with his father, with the Torah if the shul allows it on a different day, and the family in the building that means something to them. Then the party is photographed the way a party should be — fast, close, and mostly of people. We travel from New Jersey and cover photo and film with one team.
