Brooklyn is not one place, and a simcha here is not one kind of evening. Boro Park, Flatbush, Williamsburg, Crown Heights and Midwood each keep it their own way: who dances with whom, how long the badeken takes, whether the kallah's portraits happen before the kabbalas panim or in a room upstairs, and which grandparents have to be in the family photographs before anyone sits down. A photographer who treats the borough as one market gets something wrong early in the evening. This page is for every occasion in Brooklyn — weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, vorts and l'chaims, brissim, and family portraits before the next simcha — and the galleries on it are Brooklyn work we have actually photographed.
We photograph in Brooklyn regularly and have roots here, which is mostly a matter of knowing the rooms. Brooklyn halls tend to be tight, tall and busy: a chuppah room on one floor and the ballroom on another, a balcony that is either the best view of the dancing or closed to cameras altogether, and a street outside where the car cannot wait. We ask about the hall before the date, plan the lighting around the room rather than hoping it cooperates, and are in place early enough to see it before the guests do. For a bar mitzvah, the leining is on Shabbos or a weekday morning in shul, so the portraits in tallis and tefillin are planned for a day the camera is allowed. For an engagement, the Brooklyn waterfront is a short drive from any of these neighbourhoods, and the galleries below show what it looks like at sunset.
Photography and cinema are one in-house team, which matters most in a room where two crews would otherwise be working around each other, and a Brooklyn date carries no travel charge dressed up as a package upgrade. If you already know your occasion, the Brooklyn wedding, bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah pages go into more detail, and the Flatbush and Boro Park pages speak to those neighbourhoods in particular. If you are not sure yet, look through the galleries and tell us the date.
