If you search for a Jewish photographer in New York, you are usually not searching for one kind of day. It might be a wedding in Manhattan, a bar mitzvah in Queens, an engagement session in Brooklyn or Central Park, or a family simcha that needs someone who already knows how the evening runs. This is the page for all of them in the city, and the galleries on it are New York work we have actually photographed.

What carries from one occasion to the next is knowing it before it starts. We know where the badeken happens and how quickly it is over, when a tisch is running alongside the kabbalas panim, how separate dancing has to be covered properly on both sides, and when the room goes dim for the mitzvah tantz. In New York those moments happen in rooms that are smaller and taller than their New Jersey equivalents, often behind a service-entrance load-in and a timed elevator, with little or no outdoor space to fall back on. We plan the lighting and the schedule around the room rather than hoping the room cooperates.

Photography and cinema come as one team, which matters most in a tight room, where two crews working around each other is the thing to avoid. If you already know your occasion, the pages for Jewish weddings, kosher weddings, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs and Brooklyn simchas go into more detail. If you are not sure yet, look through the galleries and tell us what you are planning.
