Bukharian weddings — Bukharan, Bukhori, however the family spells it — are famously large, and most of them happen in Queens: Forest Hills, Rego Park, Kew Gardens and the halls around them. The guest lists are long, the extended family is central to the evening, and the music and dancing run hard from the moment the doors open.

The photographer's job at a wedding like this is to know who matters before the night begins. Grandparents, uncles and aunts, the relatives who travelled furthest — in a full room they are easy to miss, and they are the photographs the family will look for first. We ask for the family's own order of events beforehand rather than assuming one, cover the dancing from inside the circle with a second camera above it, and light the room properly instead of pushing the camera and hoping. Photography and cinema come from one in-house team.
